  • Day 2 Altura - Vila Real de Santo António

    7.5 Miles / 12 Km 4-5 Hrs 160ft / 50 Metres

After a transfer to the former fishing village of Altura, a relaxing hike along the beach and sand dunes guides you to the lively resort town of Monto Gordo. Here, a pleasant boardwalk leads past fishing boats and cafes on one of the finest beaches of the eastern Algarve. The trail then enters the beautiful pine forest and nature reserve of Mata de Vila Real de Santo António. Look out for wild birds and elusive chameleons on your walk to the pretty city of Vila Real de Santo António, at the mouth of the Guadiana River which forms the border to Spain. Return to Tavira by train, past lagoons and orchards.

  • Day 3 Tavira Island (Ilha de Tavira) - Tavira

    8 Miles / 13 Km 4-5 Hrs 300ft / 90 Metres

A varied and rewarding coastal loop that blends beach, history, culture and wildlife. You start with a short ferry ride on the Gilão River from Tavira town to Ilha de Tavira, a barrier island known for its golden sands. From the ferry landing, follow the wide, peaceful beach westward, with the Atlantic stretching endlessly beside you. Pass the iconic Anchor Cemetery at Praia do Barril before you can take a narrow-gauge railway back across the lagoon to the mainland from where you walk along the lagoon of the Ria Formosa Natural Park. Stop at the charming fishing village of Santa Luzia, famous for its octopus catch, and then follow quiet tracks and paths through saltpans and wetlands. Keep an eye out for flamingos and other birdlife as you make your way back to Tavira.

  • Day 4 Praia da Marinha - Carvoeiro (Seven Hanging Valleys Trail)

    5.5 Miles / 8.5 Km 3-4 Hrs 890ft / 270 Metres

After a morning transfer, this unforgettable hike along the Algarve’s breathtaking coast takes you from the stunning Praia da Marinha, often celebrated as one of Europe’s most beautiful beaches, to the charming town of Carvoeiro. Following the renowned Seven Hanging Valleys Trail, you’ll be treated to dramatic limestone cliffs, shimmering turquoise waters, and panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean. Along the way, discover hidden coves and pristine beaches, marvel at the natural beauty of sea arches and rock formations, and admire the famous Benagil Cave from above. Nearing Carvoeiro, you’ll reach Algar Seco, a fascinating natural site featuring intricate grottoes, caves, and churning pools shaped by centuries of waves. This scenic journey blends coastal wonders with geological marvels, culminating in the welcoming atmosphere of Carvoeiro.

  • Day 5 Carvoeiro - Ferragudo

    6 Miles / 9.5 Km 3-4 Hrs 980ft / 300 Metres

This beautiful and more remote hike follows the Trail of the Headlands (Caminho dos Promontórios) along cliffs and beaches with stunning coastal views of cliffs. The spectacular route takes you along rugged limestone cliffs, offering breathtaking views of the Atlantic Ocean, secluded beaches, and dramatic sea caves. Along the way, you pass a 16th-century watchtower once used to guard against pirate raids, a lighthouse and a historic river fortification. For the last few kilometres, the route turns inland and follows the wide mouth of the Arade River to the fishing village of Ferragudo, with its charming whitewashed houses and vibrant riverside cafés. From there, you are transferred to your accommodation. Less crowded than the famous Seven Hanging Valleys Trail, this well-marked trail is ideal for nature lovers.
